Diction is an interactive-fiction player and narrator from Luminous Designs. This policy explains what the app does, and does not do, with your information. Diction does not collect, store, or transmit personal information about you. From version 1.2 onward, the free version shows one advertisement, which does not use any information about you either, only that it's the Diction app.
Nothing about you. Diction has no user accounts and no sign-in, and it contains no analytics and no user or device tracking. We do not collect your name, email address, location, contacts, or usage data, and we run no servers that receive your data.
From version 1.2 onward, the free version does show one advertisement, which is described under Advertising below. It is chosen for the app, not the user, and there is no profile of you powering it.
Your game library, saved games, and settings are stored only on your device. Narration with the neural voice engine runs entirely on your device; the voice models are bundled inside the app, so nothing you read or hear is sent anywhere.
When you turn on voice commands, Diction uses Apple's Speech framework to convert your speech into text. Where your device supports on-device recognition, this happens on the device and your audio does not leave it. On devices or languages without on-device support, iOS may send audio to Apple to transcribe it, under Apple's terms and privacy policy. Diction does not record, store, or share your audio, and the microphone is active only while voice input is turned on.
When you choose to add or search for a game, Diction contacts the Interactive Fiction Database (ifdb.org) to look up listings, metadata, and cover art, and then downloads the game file from the link IFDB provides (often hosted on the IF Archive). These requests are made only when you ask to add or search for a game, and are subject to those services' own privacy practices.
Everything in this section applies to Diction 1.2 and later. Version 1.1 and everything before it contained no advertising software of any kind, and sent nothing to any advertising service.
From version 1.2, the free version of Diction shows a single advertisement for another independent app at the foot of the Library screen. It is served by Kickstart Exchange, a cross-promotion exchange through which small developers show each other's apps. Unlocking the voice features removes the advertisement.
Kickstart Exchange matches apps, not users. To fetch an advertisement, the app sends its own details: Diction's Kickstart Exchange key, bundle identifier, platform, app version, build version, the version of the Kickstart Exchange software, and whether this is a test build, along with a signed token from Apple that proves the request came from a genuine copy of Diction. Kickstart Exchange states that it checks that token and then discards it without keeping it. The country of your App Store storefront may be included, so that you are only shown apps that are actually available where you are, and for country-level totals.
Diction sends no name, email address, contacts, location, advertising identifier, or device identifier to Kickstart Exchange, and it does not read the advertising identifier at all. That is why the app never asks for permission to track you: there is nothing here that follows you between apps or builds a profile of you. Kickstart Exchange states that it does not track users or devices, does not build behavioral profiles, and does not sell information.
So that developers can be credited for the promotion they give one another, Kickstart Exchange records that an advertisement was shown and whether it was tapped. Those records count against the app rather than against a person or a device; Kickstart Exchange states that it keeps them for about 30 days, and keeps daily totals as statistics.
Tapping an advertisement opens its page in the App Store. The small information button on the advertisement explains where the advertisement came from and lets you report it; reporting sends only that advertisement's identifier and the reason you choose from a list, with nothing you type and nothing about you. The full version is unlocked with an in-app purchase handled by Apple through the App Store. Apple processes the transaction; Diction never sees your payment information. Restoring a purchase also goes through Apple.
Diction is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect information from anyone, regardless of age.
